Metallikausi tells the story of heavy music in North Ostrobothnia from its early years to the current day. The exhibition highlights previously unpublished materials and uncovers the significance of the northern scene as one of the most unique manifestations of Finnish music.
The over 500-square-meter exhibition presents never-seen-before video and photograph materials and plenty to experience: adjust pedals, try out mixers, and take the stage!
The uniqueness of metal culture consists of many unique local features. Metallikausi steps back into the early stages of Finnish metal and investigates the mark the north imprinted on it.
The exhibition was built in tight cooperation with local communities, including musicians, producers, and heavy metal fans – those who were there, and those without whom this story would not exist.
The exhibition is a tribute to northern metal bands, such as Riff Raff, Faff- Bey, Sentenced, Hebosagil and Bonehunter. These bands took the scene’s extremity to a brand-new level. For those who are here now and who were here then.
The exhibition is realized in cooperation between the Oulu Museum and the Science Centre Tietomaa.
Metallikausi live: Whiplash and thrash in Tullisali on October 10, 2026
The first gig of Metallikausi brings pioneers and experienced pros of exterme metal onto the Tullisali stage. The unique line-up includes Faff-Bey, Maple Cross, A.R.G., National Napalm Syndicate, and Wengele.

Oulu2026
Oulu is the European Capital of Culture for the year 2026. Metallikausi is part of the Oulu2026 cultural programme and cultural climate change.
